From Story to Storyteller
Link 1 measured the narrative against itself. Link 2 measures the narrator against the narrative.1 The diagnostic focus shifts from internal consistency to evidentiary command. The question is no longer “Does the story agree with itself?” but “Can the person telling the story prove it?” This is the point where the narrator’s competence, evidence, and qualifications come under examination. The story may be coherent. But can the teller back it up?
The Implicit Promise
Every claim carries an implicit promise: “I can prove this.” Link 2 tests whether that promise is kept. The gap between “I said it” and “I can prove it” is the Link 2 measurement. In legal contexts, this is the burden of production — the requirement to produce evidence, not merely allege facts.2 In journalism, it is the sourcing requirement.3 In corporate communication, it is the audit trail. In every domain, the principle is identical: assertion without demonstration is incomplete. Saying it is not proving it. The gap is the diagnosis.
Teller-to-Story Capability measures the gap between assertion and demonstration across three registers — substantive, demonstrative, and credentialing — and while it is the most commonly tested link in existing truth-assessment systems, it is only one-fifth of the Chain and is insufficient on its own.
Register 1: Substantive Capability
Capability operates across three registers. The first is substantive capability: does the evidence exist, and does the narrator have it? This is the most basic register — the evidence is real, it exists in a form that can be examined, and the narrator possesses or controls access to it.4 A narrator who claims “research supports this” but cannot produce the research has a substantive failure. A narrator who references a document that does not exist has a substantive failure. A narrator who once had the evidence but has lost, destroyed, or failed to preserve it has a substantive failure.5 If the evidence doesn’t exist or the narrator can’t produce it, the claim is unsupported.
Register 2: Demonstrative Capability
The second register is demonstrative capability: having the evidence is not the same as being able to deploy it. Demonstrative capability tests whether the narrator can present evidence competently — with clarity, accuracy, and responsiveness to challenge.6 An expert witness who possesses the data but cannot explain it under cross-examination has a demonstrative failure.7 A researcher who has conducted rigorous work but cannot communicate findings to a non-specialist audience has a demonstrative failure. This register matters because evidence that cannot be demonstrated is, diagnostically, evidence that does not exist. Inaccessible evidence is not evidence. The demonstration is the proof.
Register 3: Credentialing Capability
The third register is credentialing capability: do the narrator’s qualifications match the claims?8 Credentialing capability tests the authority of the narrator — not the truth of the claim (that is Link 5’s domain), but the standing of the person making it. A nutritionist making oncology claims. A software engineer offering legal analysis. A politician citing economic data without economic training. The Familiar Link
Link 2 is the link the world already knows. Fact-checking is a Link 2 operation. Verification is a Link 2 operation. Auditing is a Link 2 operation. Peer review is substantially a Link 2 operation. Credentialing and licensing are Link 2 operations.10 The infrastructure of truth-assessment in journalism, law, finance, and academia is overwhelmingly organized around one question: “Can you prove it?” The world has built enormous infrastructure around one-fifth of the Chain.
The Familiarity Trap
The familiarity is the problem. Because Link 2 is tested so frequently, institutions mistake it for the whole Chain.11 “We fact-checked it” becomes “It’s true.” “The sources check out” becomes “The narrative is sound.” “The credentials are valid” becomes “The narrator is reliable.” Each of these conclusions leaps from one link to five. Fact-checking tests capability. It does not test coherence, volition, adhesion, or outcome.12 The most dangerous assumption in narrative assessment is that one link is the whole chain.
The Performer’s Configuration
A narrator can demonstrate evidence brilliantly and not believe a word of it. This is the performer’s configuration: Link 2 intact, Link 3 broken.13 The narrator has the evidence, can present it competently, holds valid credentials — and is lying. The evidence is real; the intent is false. This configuration is structurally undetectable by Link 2 testing alone, which is why institutions that rely exclusively on fact-checking and verification are vulnerable to sophisticated deception.14 Capability tests what the narrator can do. Only volition (Link 3) tests what the narrator means.
Active and Latent Failures
Not all Link 2 failures are visible. An active failure is observable now: the narrator cannot produce the evidence, the data doesn’t exist, the credential is expired or invalid. A latent failure is concealed: the evidence appears to exist but is fabricated (Theranos’s lab results), manipulated (p-hacked statistics15), or misrepresented (a study cited for a conclusion it doesn’t support16). Latent failures pass casual inspection and are more dangerous precisely because they satisfy surface-level Link 2 testing. The most dangerous Link 2 failures are the ones that look like Link 2 successes.
Healthy Indicators
A narrative with healthy Link 2 exhibits demonstrable evidentiary command.17 Evidence is produced, not merely cited. The narrator can withstand interrogation on the evidence without evasion. Credentials are verifiable and relevant to the claims made. Sources are primary or peer-reviewed, not hearsay or derivative. The narrator distinguishes between what they know and what they infer — and flags the difference. Healthy Link 2 is transparent, verifiable, and responsive to challenge.
These are the signs of a narrator who can prove what they say.
Broken Indicators
A narrative with broken Link 2 exhibits recognizable evidentiary failure. Evidence is asserted but not produced. Sources are cited but not verifiable. Credentials are claimed but not substantiated. The narrator evades direct questions about evidence. The narrator conflates inference with fact. The narrator appeals to authority without producing the authority’s actual work.18 And the most telling indicator: when challenged, the narrator shifts the claim rather than defending it — a sign that the original claim cannot be supported. Evasion under challenge is Link 2’s diagnostic signature.19
These are the signs of a narrator who cannot prove what they say — and knows it.

A narrative built on evidence the narrator cannot present is, diagnostically, a narrative built on assertion. The evidence exists in the scientist’s mind but not in the communication.
The practitioner handles this tension by recognizing that demonstrative failure is not a judgment of the narrator’s intelligence or the evidence’s validity. It is a diagnosis of the narrative’s capability. The remedy is not to lower the standard but to improve the demonstration — through better communication, through intermediaries who can translate the evidence, or through written documentation that compensates for verbal limitation. The evidence must be made accessible. Inaccessible evidence is diagnostically equivalent to absent evidence.
- Application: A CEO claims “our company has the best safety record in the industry.” Identify what evidence you would require to test each of the three registers of Link 2 for this claim.

Substantive: Industry-wide safety data for comparison (not just the company’s own data). OSHA incident reports. Third-party audit results. The time period for “best” (best this year? Best over five years? Best ever?). The metric for “safety record” (incident rate? Lost-time injuries? Fatalities? Near-misses?). Without these, the claim is unsubstantiated.
Demonstrative: Can the CEO present this data under questioning? If asked “Best by what metric?” or “Compared to which competitors?” — can the CEO answer with specificity, or does the claim dissolve into vagueness? Evasion under challenge is the demonstrative failure signal.
Credentialing: Is the CEO qualified to interpret safety data? Is the company’s safety assessment conducted by qualified professionals (safety engineers, certified industrial hygienists)? If the CEO is relying on subordinates’ analysis, is there a credentialed chain from the data to the claim?

Structural reason: individuals lack the institutional infrastructure to conceal capability failures.
The implication for practice: corporate narratives require deeper Link 2 investigation (look for latent failures beneath the surface). Interpersonal narratives reveal Link 2 failures more readily but may mask Link 3 (volition) failures behind apparent candor.
