When a fablehesionist encounters a narrative, the first question is always the same: Does this story agree with itself?1
Not “Is this true?” — that is the founding question’s domain, measured at Link 5. Not “Can you prove it?” — that is Link 2. Not “Do you believe it?” — that is Link 3. The first diagnostic operation is simpler and more fundamental: internal alignment. The story measured against itself.
If the narrative contradicts itself, nothing else matters yet.
What “Story-to-Self” Means
“Story-to-Self” means the narrative is its own standard at this link. Link 1 does not compare the narrative to external reality — that comparison comes later (Link 5: Outcome). Link 1 compares the narrative to itself.2 Does Claim A, stated on page 3, contradict Claim B, stated on page 47? Does the timeline presented in the opening match the timeline referenced in the conclusion? Do the premises stated in the argument actually produce the conclusion drawn?
The referent is the narrative itself. The standard is internal.3
Story-to-Self Coherence is the gateway to the Chain of Authenticity — the necessary first condition that must hold before any subsequent link can be meaningfully assessed, tested across four dimensions: internal consistency, temporal logic, logical entailment, and evidentiary alignment.
Dimension 1: Internal Consistency
The first dimension of coherence is internal consistency: claims do not contradict each other.4
This is the simplest and most common Link 1 test. A corporate earnings call that claims “revenue grew 12%” in Q1 and later references “the decline in Q1 revenue” has a Link 1 failure. A witness who testifies “I was not present” and later says “When I arrived at the scene…” has a Link 1 failure. The contradiction may be explicit — direct — or implicit — two claims that cannot both be true given known constraints.5
If the narrative says X and not-X, Link 1 is broken.
Dimension 2: Temporal Logic
The second dimension is temporal logic: events occur in a sequence that is physically and logically possible.
A narrative that places a person in two locations at the same time has a temporal logic failure. A narrative that describes an effect preceding its cause has a temporal logic failure. A narrative that compresses or expands time in ways inconsistent with documented records has a temporal logic failure.6 Timeline analysis is fundamental to legal, journalistic, and forensic fablehesion.7
Time does not lie. Timelines that contradict themselves reveal the narrative’s structural failure.
Dimension 3: Logical Entailment
The third dimension is logical entailment: conclusions follow from premises.
A narrative that states premises A and B and draws conclusion C is coherent only if C follows from A and B. If C does not follow — if the conclusion is a logical leap, a non sequitur, or an emotional assertion disguised as inference — then Link 1 is broken at the logical level.8 This dimension requires the practitioner to apply the trivium’s second art: Logic.9
The conclusion must be earned by the premises. Assertion is not entailment.
Dimension 4: Evidentiary Alignment
The fourth dimension is evidentiary alignment: cited evidence supports the claims it is cited for.10
A narrative may cite a study, a statistic, a legal precedent, or a witness statement. Link 1 asks: does the cited evidence actually support the claim attached to it? A study that measured X cited as evidence for Y is an evidentiary alignment failure — even if the study is real and the data is accurate. The evidence is real; the alignment is false.11
Evidence cited is not evidence aligned. The Chain tests the relationship, not just the existence.
Complexity Is Not Incoherence
Complexity is not incoherence.12
A multinational merger involves hundreds of actors, multiple jurisdictions, competing timelines, and layered causal chains. It can be enormously complex and perfectly coherent — every element aligns internally, even if understanding requires effort. Conversely, a single sentence can be incoherent: “I never received the email, but I responded immediately.”
Complexity is about scale. Coherence is about alignment. The practitioner must not confuse difficulty with failure. A hard story is not a broken story. The Chain distinguishes between narratives that are difficult to follow and narratives that contradict themselves.13
Healthy Indicators
A coherent narrative exhibits recognizable structural health.14 Claims reinforce each other across the narrative. The timeline survives cross-referencing. Conclusions follow logically from stated premises. Evidence matches its cited purpose. When new information is introduced, it integrates without contradiction. The narrative can withstand interrogation from multiple angles without generating internal conflict.
These are the signs of a narrative that agrees with itself.
Broken Indicators
An incoherent narrative exhibits recognizable structural failure. Self-contradiction — direct or indirect. Timeline fracture. Logical impossibility or non sequitur. Evidence that contradicts its own citation. And critically: retroactive narrative revision — changing the story after the fact to absorb new information, which leaves seams where old and new versions conflict.
These are the signs of a narrative at war with itself.
Retroactive Narrative Revision
Retroactive narrative revision deserves special attention because it is both a Link 1 failure and a diagnostic signal for Link 3.15
When a narrator changes the story after the fact — not corrects it (correction is fablehesive), but revises it to appear as though the original version never existed — the revision creates structural seams. The old version and the new version cannot both be true. This is a Link 1 failure: incoherence between versions. But it also signals a potential Link 3 failure: the narrator may not have believed the original version, or may not believe the revised one.16
Correction is integrity. Revision without acknowledgment is concealment. The Chain distinguishes between them.17
When Link 1 Fails
When Link 1 fails, the Chain pauses.18
There is no diagnostic value in testing Links 2–5 on a narrative that does not agree with itself. Can the narrator prove what? (Link 2 requires a coherent claim to test.) Does the narrator believe which version? (Link 3 requires a single narrative to assess.) Did the audience retain which story? (Link 4 requires consistent communication.) Did the outcome align with which stated purpose? (Link 5 requires a single standard.)19
Incoherence makes every subsequent link unmeasurable. Restore coherence first. Then proceed. The Chain cannot diagnose what it cannot read.20

Evidentiary alignment: The evidence cited (conventional sourcing) directly contradicts the claim it is supposed to support (100% organic). This is an evidentiary alignment failure — the evidence undermines the claim rather than supporting it.
Three of four dimensions fail. This is a severely incoherent narrative in three sentences.

If a narrative fails Links 1, 3, and 5 but passes Links 2 and 4, the pattern suggests a specific failure type (a well-evidenced lie with high audience retention that produces divergent outcomes). This is useful intelligence, but it is not formal diagnosis — it is triage.
The chapter’s instruction should be read as: in formal diagnostic practice, stop at Link 1 and restore coherence. In investigative or exploratory assessment, a quick survey of all five links can inform triage — but the formal diagnosis must wait for Link 1 resolution.
